Lymphedema Physical Therapy

Lymphedema Physical Therapy: Fast Facts

Lymphedema occurs when the body’s lymphatic vessels are damaged, when the lymph nodes are surgically removed, or when the lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired. With lymphedema physical therapy, you can reduce the symptoms to help you get back to normal everyday life. Your therapist will talk to you about your medical history and your current symptoms before developing a lymphedema physical therapy plan. Some hands-on treatment will take place, involving manual lymphatic drainage.

This helps to encourage the movement of fluid to provide you with some relief. You may also learn about how to incorporate compression garments to help with your symptoms. Specific exercises will be recommended as part of your lymphedema physical therapy plan. These exercises will help you increase muscle strength, which also should help to improve lymph flow. Over time, your treatments will be adjusted and tailored to your needs, so you can experience less pain and fewer symptoms.
