Pregnancy is an exciting journey, but it can also come with new aches, pains, and pressure that make everyday activities more challenging. As your baby grows, your body undergoes significant hormonal and physical changes that can lead to discomfort throughout the pelvis and lower back.
Many pregnant individuals experience:
Pelvic girdle pain
Low back pain
Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain
Tailbone pain
Pubic symphysis pain (SPD/PSD)
Round ligament pain
Pelvic pressure
While maternity support belts and belly bands can be helpful, they are not always comfortable or supportive enough for every person. One alternative that many pelvic floor physical therapists recommend is Kinesiology Tape (KT Tape).
What Is KT Tape?
KT Tape is a flexible cotton-blend adhesive tape designed to move with your body. Unlike athletic tape that restricts movement, KT Tape provides gentle support while allowing you to continue moving comfortably.
When applied correctly, KT Tape may help:
Support the growing abdomen
Reduce strain on pelvic muscles and ligaments
Improve body awareness and posture
Promote circulation and lymphatic drainage
Decrease discomfort during daily activities
Because every pregnancy is different, taping techniques can be customized depending on where you are experiencing pain or pressure.
Why Does Pregnancy Cause Pelvic Pain?
During pregnancy, hormones such as relaxin, estrogen, and progesterone help prepare the body for childbirth by increasing ligament flexibility. While this is completely normal, the increased joint laxity combined with your changing center of gravity places greater stress on the muscles supporting your pelvis.
This can contribute to discomfort in the:
Low back
SI joints
Tailbone
Pubic symphysis
Round ligaments
Abdomen
KT Tape provides an additional layer of external support to help reduce this stress.
KT Tape Basics
Before applying KT Tape, keep these general tips in mind.
Cut the Correct Length
If using an uncut roll, measure the area first, then cut the tape approximately 1 to 2 inches shorter than the measurement. Around 12 inches is a good starting point for most applications.
Round the Corners
Always round the edges of each strip. Rounded corners help prevent the tape from peeling prematurely.
Anchor Without Stretch
The first and last 1 to 2 inches of every strip should be applied with no stretch. This helps the tape stay in place and reduces skin irritation.
Activate the Adhesive
After application, gently rub the tape to activate the adhesive through friction.
Wear Time
KT Tape typically stays on for 3 to 5 days and can usually be worn while showering.
Avoid applying lotions or oils before taping since they reduce adhesion.
Remove Carefully
If irritation develops, remove the tape immediately.
For easier removal, apply baby oil, coconut oil, or another skin-safe oil before slowly peeling the tape away in the shower.

KT Tape for Pelvic Pressure
Pelvic pressure often increases as the baby grows and the abdomen becomes heavier.
How to Apply
Lie on your back with your knees bent. This helps lift the abdomen and places the pelvis in a more supported position.
If lying with bent knees is uncomfortable, gently lift your belly with your hands while someone else applies the tape.
Apply one horizontal strip underneath the belly, beginning at one hip bone and following the natural curve to the opposite hip.
Apply two vertical strips on either side of the belly button.
Stretch these strips approximately 50 to 75% while applying upward over the abdominal muscles.
Finish each strip with the final 1 to 2 inches applied without stretch.
This technique helps provide gentle lift and support for the growing abdomen.
KT Tape for Round Ligament Pain and Pubic Symphysis Pain (SPD/PSD)
Round ligament pain and pubic symphysis discomfort are common as pregnancy progresses.
How to Apply
Begin with the same horizontal support strip underneath the belly.
Apply two additional strips following the natural angle of the groin.
Start each strip over the horizontal support strip.
Stretch the tape approximately 50 to 75% while applying upward toward the ribs.
Finish each strip without stretch.
This taping pattern provides additional support across the lower abdomen and pelvis.
KT Tape for Tailbone Pain
Tailbone pain can make sitting, standing, and changing positions uncomfortable.
How to Apply
Stand while leaning slightly forward against a countertop or table.
Cut one strip with rounded corners and create a rounded point on one end.
Place the pointed end at the top of the gluteal cleft.
Apply the first 1 to 2 inches without stretch.
Stretch the tape approximately 50 to 75% while applying upward along the spine.
Add two additional strips on either side, angling outward and upward.
Finish each strip without stretch.
KT Tape for Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain
SI joint pain is one of the most common pregnancy-related complaints.
How to Apply
Stand while leaning slightly forward.
Apply one horizontal anchor strip across the lower back with no stretch.
Apply one strip on each side beginning near the outer hip.
Stretch each strip 50 to 75% while creating a hook-shaped pattern underneath the buttock and upward toward the spine.
Finish the final 1 to 2 inches without stretch.
This taping method helps provide support to the pelvis while reducing stress on the SI joints.
When Should You See a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist?
While KT Tape can provide temporary support and symptom relief, it does not address the underlying cause of pelvic pain.
A pelvic floor physical therapist can evaluate:
Muscle strength
Joint mobility
Pelvic alignment
Core function
Breathing mechanics
Movement patterns
Treatment may include:
Manual therapy
Personalized exercise programs
Mobility training
Labor preparation
Postural education
KT Tape application techniques
Home exercise programs
The goal is to help you stay active, move comfortably, and enjoy your pregnancy with less pain.
The Bottom Line
Pregnancy discomfort is common, but it should not simply be something you have to "push through."
KT Tape is a safe, non-invasive option that may help reduce pelvic pain, improve comfort, and provide additional support throughout pregnancy. Because every pregnancy is unique, working with a pelvic floor physical therapist ensures that taping is applied safely and effectively for your specific needs.
